Kitty Kibble Size - Question Sent In

Opened the new bag of Kumpi Kat today. Noticed the kibble was smaller - any reason?

Arthur and Patrick did not notice - they finished their bowls without coming up for air.

Hiya K ~

When pet food is made, there is a marginal parameter they work to stay within. Usually,
I have cat food run two or three times a year, to keep the stock fresher. So sometimes, the
kibble will be smaller; I have asked them as they are calibrating their equipment to factor
for a smaller kibble than larger if there will be any variation.

There has actually been a scientific study that indicates a dog fed the same exact formula
of food in different sized kibbles had better retention of nutrients with the smaller kibble;
that was accomplished by measuring fecal matter; it has to do with surface area.

When I first was choosing a kibble for the cat food, I was told that the X shape was very
popular, since many cats don't want to eat kibble that their saliva has already touched. It
allows some companies to factor in a % of loss to the customer from each bag. The crunching
of the kibble isn't what dictates dentition, as much as the acid/alkaline level in the body.
But, just like the fallacy that corn isn't digestible, the sell on the X shape being superior for
dentition seems to sell.

Thanks for the question! It's a good Q & A for my blog.....minus the personal information.
